REVIEW – Suicide Squad Trailer

This is the second time that Suicide Squad has given us a fantastic trailer. If it’s not careful, it’s going to convince the world that DC movies have finally come to play instead of just showing up.

The first Suicide Squad teaser trailer was all about convincing us that a movie about a black ops task force made up of super villains that included Harley Quinn and Killer Croc would actually look good. This trailer is about convincing us that it will actually be FUN.

Previous DC movies have been a lot of things but ever since the The Dark Knight trilogy, they’ve been so hellbent on finding its aesthetic/identity, that it never had time to really consider if any of its heroes or villains had much personality. It looks like Suicide Squad is making up for lost time. Margot Robbie looks like she’s going to be a joy any time she’s on the screen, Jared Leto is absolutely insistent on not becoming the first “meh” Joker and seeing Will Smith in a somber role that’s not on the hunt for Oscar gold is jarring and exciting to say the least.

I love how every bullet, explosion and punch to the face is either played for comedic effect or to establish characters. This trailer is efficient in its exposition so it can lay on the charm and laughs in excess. It does not let up until the very end, which I’m sorry to say is the only not-awesome part of this trailer. Having Harley Quinn smash a window to grab a designer purse and justify it with, “We’re bad guys, it’s what we do” is just too obvious for an otherwise witty and surprising trailer. But hey, 99 out of a 100 still ain’t bad.

It’s appropriate this trailer was edited to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” since it showed us a world where chaos can be reined in for good. Beautiful, glorious, neon-lit good.

Check out my video review below to see me geek out on this trailer a bit more. Thanks!
