“Deadpool” is not a perfect movie but it is a near-perfect Deadpool movie.
While many of us fans had given up on the dream of seeing a Deadpool movie adaptation that managed to look like it was made by people who had actually read a Deadpool comic, we are fortunate enough to live in a world where Ryan Reynolds does not give up so easily.
Mr. Reynolds is largely to thank/blame for this film since he has been trying to get it made for over ten years. That kind of dedication and passion certainly bleeds into every aspect of this movie. It’s clear from the start that the cast and crew were not satisfied with just getting enough right and it’s why it will surely be a case study for Hollywood as to why so many of their assumptions about comic book movies are so wrong.
The action is thrilling, creative and plays with the laws of physics but not so much that their superpowered characters are beyond them. The humor is fast, dark and extreme. In the spandex world of self-important superheroes, its refreshing to see that none of that pretentiousness has stuck to Wade W. Wilson.
Deadpool has always been a satirical character but one of his key characteristics has always been his insecurities. Disfigured from the experiments that bestowed him with incredible healing powers, Wade is ashamed of his appearance and is certain that nobody, including the love of his love (played wonderfully be Morena Baccarin), could ever love him. It’s this counterpoint to his endless array of poop and dick jokes that makes both the character and the movie Deadpool so sweet, endearing and charming.
At 108 minute running time, the movie feels short, considering how in-demand this character has been. Another 30 minutes would’ve been much appreciated and since the sequel is sure to have a bigger budget than its big brother, I expect Deadpool 2 to right this wrong.
Also, Colossus is fantastic and perfect. So is Negasonic Teenage Warhead. More rated-R X-Men pleaseandthankyou.
