I consider myself a writer and I confess that I had a moment where I just wanted to make this a one-word review and that word would’ve been simply,”Meh.”
I admit that I have never seen any of the Jason Bourne movies. In fact, the only Bourne movie I’ve ever seen is “The Bourne Legacy” which stars Jeremy Renner and that was mostly because I think Renner is probably the most underrated action star working today. Plus, his forearms are amazing.
So I freely admit that I may not be the best person to tell you whether or not this trailer actually does a good job of building upon the story laid down by the previous Bourne trilogy. However, I can say with absolutely certainty that to the uninitiated viewer (like me) this trailer made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Clearly, this trailer thinks that by having Julia Stiles exclaim to Jason Bourne, “Just because you remember everything doesn’t mean you know everything” we’ll be immediately intrigued by the mystery of Jason’s past that he thought he had solved. I am not at all invested in the Jason Bourne character so the idea that he still has a few more secrets to uncover means absolutely nothing to me.
Since the rest of the trailer is a confusing display of old footage and what I presume is new footage of people looking concerned, talking on headsets and cellphones, saying the name “Jason Bourne” in hushed, surprised tones and occasionally taking aim with sniper rifles, I was left even more confused since there was no attempt to tell the story we’ll be seeing when this film debuts.
Clearly, this trailer was not made for someone like me, someone who has no frame of reference whatsoever for what’s in this trailer. However, it’s no excuse since in this age of reboots and sequels, the art of making a trailer for a franchise film is not a new one.
So for now, I think I’ll stick with my new favorite word when someone asks if I’m going to go see this film: “Meh.”
Check out my video review below to see a shot of the first “Meh” said aloud after seeing this trailer. Thanks!
