REVIEW: Star Trek Beyond Trailer

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 6.08.48 PMThis is a 90 second trailer of non-stop action and it has pissed off a lot of people.

I can’t say that I’m one of them.

Full disclosure, if I’m entertained, I’m willing to overlook a multitude of sins. While I don’t think this trailer is all that sinful, I do understand the hostility it’s been getting from my fellow Trekkies/Trekkers. The 90 seconds we see here seems to have very little to do with the original premise of exploring the final frontier and to go boldly where no one has gone before.

This trailer does go where many have gone before. There is absolutely no new ground being broken here. However, I still enjoyed it very much.

As a long-time consumer of pop culture and who has worked in  marketing, I recognize that this trailer was obviously made to appeal to as many people as possible. They are completely aware of the fact that this trailer is going to be attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and thus watched, at the very least, a few hundred bajillion times. They wanted to make a splash and remind people that another sci-fi franchise actually does exist.

Couple that with the fact that they needed to separate themselves from the disappointing Star Trek: Into Darkness and also paint a contrast between themselves, Star Wars and their respective marketing, I was not at all shocked or disappointed by the trailer.

The fact that JJ Abrams is still attached to the project as a producer and Simon Pegg is a co-writer also buys a lot of faith from me. I believe that the geeks making this movie are going to steer it in the right direction.

I just really hope that nobody comes for my Trekkie cred card in the meantime…

Check out my video review below where I plead my case a bit more. Thanks!
