This is a near flawless trailer. The fact that my only complaint about it is the Percy Jackson-ish logo speaks to how far I have to go in order to nitpick it.
This is a masterclass on how to craft an elegant teaser that respects the intelligence of its audience, describes its premise in as few words and images as possible and still manages to get me so excited that the worst part of the trailer is the release date since it is 11 months away.
Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander, the wizarding world’s foremost expert on magical beasts who is called in to help wrangle some of said beasts who have managed to escape into 1930/40s Muggle America.
This trailer is absolutely simple in its execution as it does just enough in order to reintroduce us to the world created in the Harry Potter books and films. This speaks to Warner Bros. not only knowing but trusting in the fact that Harry Potter is a big enough fictional universe that nobody is going to be confused as to what “wizarding world” is being referred to. (I have a friend that has staunchly avoided reading the books or watching the movies and even she knows the name J.K. Rowling.)
The success of Harry Potter relies mostly on its incredibly detailed universe. It has so much to say about wizard schools, culture, sports and laws that they become the meat of the books and films. Seeing that universe expanded across the pond to America is incredibly exciting. The editor of this trailer/Warner Bros. knew how much we want to see more of the wizarding world so they included a shot that shows a banner that reads “The Magical Congress Of The United States Of America”. Permission to “SQUEE!” granted.
This is the trailer that all other teaser trailers are going to be held to. I hope Ghostbusters is paying attention.
