All it takes is a little magic.

This teaser trailer is light on big spectacular spells and we only get to catch glimpses of the fantastic beasts in question, but that’s because they know that a little goes a long way.

As a Harry Potter fan who only knows the wizarding world through the Harry Potter films and theme parks, I did not know a lot about the film’s protagonist, Newt Scamander.

Sure, I knew that he was the foremost expert on magical creatures since he literally wrote the book on them, which is the film’s namesake and inspiration. But I had no clue that he was educated at Hogwarts by future-headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Or that an incident involving a magical creature endangered the life of another person resulting in his expulsion.

I also like that this will be Newt’s first time in New York so that we, the audience, will be discovering this American wizarding world alongside with him. It was very wise to set this movie in 1920s New York, where fashion is flapper couture and New York isn’t overcrowded by gastropubs and dive bars.

A movie that takes us back to the wizarding world of Harry Potter about magical creatures running loose in 1920s New York? It’s a slam dunk already and these trailers just seem like a warm-up to the victory lap that’s coming in November.
